Pickleball Under Lights: Why We Moved Open Play to 9 PM
Every Botle pickleball open play so far has followed the same script: early morning, court booked before the city's even properly awake, players showing up half asleep with coffee in hand. It works, but it also filters out an entire crowd, the ones who'd rather sleep in on a Saturday and play sport after dark instead.
So for this edition, we flipped it. Saturday, 1st August, 9:15 PM, Games Period Jayanagar. No early alarm, no rushing out before breakfast. Just a late Saturday night turned into a pickleball session, followed by ice cream.
Why We Ditched the Early Morning Slot
The early morning format made sense on paper, cooler weather, empty courts, a clean start to the weekend. But it also meant we were only ever pulling in the same kind of player: the early riser who already had their weekend routine sorted around a 7 AM game.
Moving to 9:15 PM changed who showed up. People coming straight from dinner plans, people who'd never have set an alarm for a 7 AM rally but were more than happy to swing by after 9. The energy was different too, less "let's get this done before the sun's up," more "we're here to have a good time." Under lights, with music running in the background and a crowd that was there to actually hang out between points, the session felt less like a fitness slot and more like a weekend plan.
Running It Like a Mini Tournament
We didn't just open the courts and let people rally aimlessly. The format was structured like a mini tournament:
- Warm-up round with mini games and target practice, so even first-timers got a feel for the paddle before anything competitive started
- Bracket-style amateur matches, short games, quick turnarounds, players rotating in and out so nobody was stuck waiting courtside for long
- A beginner-friendly track running parallel, so newcomers weren't thrown into the deep end against players who'd been at this for months
The tournament structure did two things. It gave the competitive players something to actually play for, bragging rights if nothing else, and it kept the pace fast enough that nobody got bored watching from the sidelines. By the time we got to the final matches, we had a proper crowd cheering court-side, which almost never happens at 7 AM.
The Scoops at the End
Once the last match wrapped, the group moved over to Milano for fresh Italian gelato, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio. After a night session under lights, that felt less like an add-on and more like the natural way to close out the evening. It's a different energy from grabbing a post-match protein shake at 8 AM and heading home to shower before work.
What This Means Going Forward
The night slot outperformed our expectations on turnout and, more importantly, on how long people stuck around. Early morning open play will stay in the rotation, some players genuinely prefer it, but the 9 PM tournament format is now a template we're going to repeat. Pickleball works as a competitive weeknight-energy sport just as well as it works as a sunrise activity, and Saturday night proved that.
Next mini tournament's already in the works. If mornings were never your thing, this is the one to watch for.
